Missionary Age Change
The biggest problem currently facing BYU is the age change of missionaries. For the next couple of years, it will be interesting to see what the incoming freshman class will look like until everything stabilizes and the university has adjusted to the sudden change. I personal am living in Wyview Park, which is mostly full of freshmen. Due to this sudden change, there are now over 40 empty beds available, and that is just in the girls rooms. I know that it isn't necessarily considered a problem that so many people are deciding to serve full time missions because the faculty of BYU is so excited to see the missionary numbers soaring. However, for BYU as a school, this might be a difficult hurdle to jump. Everyone has begun to wonder, what will the freshman class look like next year? Will there be anyone in 100 level classes? Or will it be a huge class of current return missionaries, making out freshman class all 21 year old guys and the occasional 18 year old girls? In two years, when all of the current missionaries come home, will there still be room at BYU for all of them to return? I am not sure if this is a problem that can necessarily be "fixed", however, but rather just something that must be dealt with. I am sure that the President Samuelson must have a plan for how to deal with this sudden change in the makeup of the student body, and what it will mean for the university. But I am interested to see exactly how this will be faced because it is a challenge that has never been faced by BYU before.
