Each and every one of us, as students of BYU, are very aware
of how big our school is. There are approximately 35,000 of us on campus each
day. We all come from different backgrounds and from all over the world. We
have our own families and close friends. And now that we are here at school, we
all have to make some big changes in our lives. Some of those changes are
learning to live with a roommate or learning how to get around a new city, also
learning how to make decisions and also with whom we’ll make them.
So a lot of us are freshmen, and we
might already have some friends and buddies here on campus or as roommates. On
the other hand, there are many who don’t know hardly anyone here! I’m lucky and
have been born and raised in Utah, so I do have some friends and people here at
BYU that I know. But even I, (being someone who was raised in Utah) don’t know
a whole lot of people at BYU and especially in my classes, if anyone. So a big
problem at BYU is connecting the social network and making sure that everyone
feels included in such a big school.
This problem is mainly towards freshmen and transfer
students, anyone new to the school. A possible solution to this could be to
have more social activities as a whole school to get to know more people. Also
individual classes can have more group activities and assignments that help you
associate more with those fellow students. It is said that college students
need a balance in life between schoolwork and social life. This is a way to
help fix that balance and feel more united with each other and as a school.
