Who is the Author?
When I listen to music, and I really enjoy the lyrics, I immediately begin to research the artist to find out who they are and why they wrote what they did. Similarly, when I am listening to a debate or an argument, the first things that comes to mind is, "who is speaking right now?" I like to know not only who they are, but where they are from, and what their typical stance is on a variety of issues. I can listen to an argument easily without knowing these details, but I will typically only take what is said with a grain of salt. I find that until I know the background of the author, I am not too trusting of what it is that they have to say. Even if I do find out that they come from a political background contrary to my beliefs, I am much more willing to listen to them if I find that they are a credible sources. I may even let them influence me to change my mind. But if someone random writes an article about an issue that they are very emotionally invested in, I have a much harder time paying attention to what they are saying. When I listen to an argument, no matter how well constructed it is, for me it always comes down to who is trying to argue the point.

It is kind of funny. You and I took separate approaches to this post. I find it a lot easier to be convinced of something when I have an emotional connection with it. But, I don't completely disagree with you. I do find it important that someone is credible. I wouldn't believe Justin Beiber if he came out and said that we should all donate our left earlobes for operations that need skin grafts. Okay, bad example, but I think you get my point.
ReplyDeleteWell for me at least I agree mostly with you that the background of an author is important. With music though I sometimes like to just hear good music regardless of the artist. Same with arguments sometimes. When an argument is being made that is supported by good evidence and is logical and convincing it doesn't matter if my little brother or the President said it, I still might be convinced.
