Instagram

Dear Hipsters/IPhone users,

We all understand that Instagram is a fun, creative way to share photos of “visually appealing”  moments in your life, but that does not mean you need to take a picture of every moment of your life and post it to Instagram. It was intended to be a central, online location for people to share their hobby of photography, not Facebook in pure, photographic form.  If I wanted to see thousands of pictures of food and “selfies,” I would either look down at my plate, or look in the mirror. And just because you took a mediocre picture of the sunrise or a mountain with some snow on top, and then proceeded to “edit” (I’m using this term very loosely) it with a terrible 99 cent app does NOT make you a photographer. Stop It. It’s getting old.  There is more to photography that just pointing and shooting a low quality cell phone camera. There are many theories and rules of composition that play a part in taking a high quality photograph, that take years to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively implement them. In addition to this, the needed equipment and software easily costs more than tuition here at BYU,which is far more than your $200 phone. So, playtime is over hipsters. Go back to listening to your indie music, riding your fixed gear bikes, and cuffing your jeans unnecessary amounts.

Like it or not,
A disgruntled photography minor
